Le Mans 2011 in 100ish Photos
Thursday 10 November 2011
The track had been moved into the hall the previous evening
Initially we had to connect the new wiring loom Phil Rees and Alan Bullock had worked on prior to the event. It had taken them literally hours
Liam Smith and Cliff Roythorne worked on one piece of track…
….Alan Bullock another….
…..and Paul Levers another.
Once the track was together it took six hours to find a crossed wire!
Chris Defraine carried out a full Risk Assessment
Finally the track was complete and running
Time for home knowing the track would be ready for testing tomorrow

Teams Update
Allsorts
Former DHORC Member Terry Dingley visited us at DHORC 395 on Tuesday 16Aug11, he could well be interested in running with Allsorts, watch this space

DHORC
One of our top drivers Tom Measham is back with the team again this year, it was thought that with Jamie Sismey taking a year out due to him being in his last year at Uni and Tom Chadwick not running that Tom Measham would also not run but I am very pleased to report that he will be racing for us.

Ecurie Anglais (Fully Paid up – Thank you)
Unfortunately Marc Townsend will now not be able to attend but Andy’s team has two very keen Rookies with Craig and Paul Homewood lining up to race.

Gixxers
Paul Roach returns to the team after competing in 2010 and Rookie Lee Miller joins the team. They are seeking a fifth driver

Live Timing on the Web
I am pleased to announce that North Staffs Scalextric Racing Club will be working closely with DHORC to provide up to date live timing of this year’s event – more to follow
26 June 11 Le Mans 2011 – Update 1
Time to start preparing for our 19th running of the DHORC Le Mans 24-Hour Race on Sat/Sun 12/13Nov11, I hope you are all ready for another memorable event?
Having rung round the team captains I am pleased to announce that the following teams will be back this year.
Allsorts – Who will probably have some additions to their team.
DHORC – We have dropped the “Revolution” name now and just going with DHORC. Due to Jamie Sismey being in his last year of college he will be having a year out from the event. I am pleased to advise that Rick Burneson will be joining the team this year; it will be great to see Rick back after a year sabbatical. He is already working on the Team’s car bodies and liveries! Cliff Roythorne has also been invited to join the team opening up an extra lane for the event, with his team Virgin HO Racing not running in 2011, which is covered later.
Gixxers – John Fearn returns with a revised team
Miniature Auto Racing Club – Rob Hayes believes it will be the same team making the trip across the pond from the USA again
Sports Carazing – Gary Skipp is also back, team mates to be confirmed
Vorsprung DHORC Technik – Martin Allsopp and Phil Rees’ team will again return also with a revised line up
Wrun Wragged – Dean Wragg’s World Record Breaking team returns again, possibly with a strengthened team. We had all better start practicing now!
The remaining lane will be filled by a new team Écurie Anglaise entered by Andy Player one of the founders of the Worthing HO Club who I am sure will be pushing the leaders all the way. Andy raced for the first time in 2010 with the Gixxers team so already has some experience of the event. Welcome Écurie Anglaise the very best of luck. The Entry Form for this year’s event can be found below:-
.
Congratulations to Wrun Wragged

Back Row (LtoR) Andy Abbott, Dean Wragg, Tony Baldock and Steve Guard
Front Row (LtoR) Rob Heaton and Michael Ovens
Nobody could even see Wrun Wragged in the distance come the chequered flag at the end of the 2010 Le Mans race, such was their lead. The 15 minute record was broken by Tony Baldock, the hour record was broken by Tony and the three hour record was broken by the combined efforts of Tony, Michael Ovens and Dean Wragg all on Lane 4 during the last three hours of the race. Therefore there was no surprise when Wrun Wragged annihilated the original record of 6,081 laps (268.727 miles) leaving it at 6,311 laps (278.895 miles). Rob Heaton was the brains behind the technical department producing a truly stunning car. Captain Dean may have won in 2009 with a new track record but it was the World Record he really wanted, but in his wildest dreams I honestly don’t believe he thought they could break it by the margin they did. It was a truly awesome demonstration of team work, car preparation and tactics, congratulations to all.
Before the race began Qualifying also went to Tony for the third time, although Nick Sismey was relieved to see that was the only record that Tony didn’t break. DHORC Revolution finished where they expected to finish, not really believing they could hold a candle to Wrun Wragged. Gary Skipp and Sports Carazing were the only other team to win more than one hour during the race, (Wrun Wragged taking 21 hour wins). Their third place was their best to date and with the way they are developing they will be a force to deal with in ’11.
Vorsprung DHORC Technik made fourth their own after taking 20 hours to deal with Miniature Auto Racing Club all the way from the US of A. However it was MARCs first run at the 24-hour race so it was hats off to them for making the long journey, getting into the spirit of the event and making an excellent start to what hopefully will be many visits to Derby; a big thank you to Rob Hayes for organising the team. Back to VDT, this was Phil Rees’s ninth 4th place finish in 18 attempts, but don’t tell him!
Le Mans stalwarts Allsorts came in sixth, team leaders Alan Bullock and Roy Masters thoroughly enjoying their tenth event, especially as they kept two teams behind them. Gixxers, who came in eighth, was a real eclectic team with three Rookies and three CHORC Members. Andy Player led the Rookies, John Fearn led CHORC and the team; it was very much a learning year for them.
Virgin HO Racing took home the Wooden Spoon but were not deflated, seven of the drivers were new to the event and they were also running the youngest competitor with Jacob Pateman (8). Cliff Roythorne did a good job of managing the team who all enjoyed themselves.
Ian Durance
Buxton 24HR
The building was originally built, without a roof, by the Duke of Devonshire in the 19th century to house the large number of horses on his estate with the inner circle of the building being exactly a furlong in length!
Later that century the Duke converted the building into a hospital for the poor whereupon the domed roof was installed. Only during the last ten years was the building handed over to the University.
The amazing roof is the largest unsupported dome in Europe being approx 150’ in diameter. If we were worried that our full track would not fit we needn’t as there was 20 feet to spare either end between the track and the pillars! Below the wooden floor of The Dome is a spa and with under floor heating we were kept lovely and warm even though the cold nights had come early to that part of north Derbyshire. But don’t leave any food on the floor unless you want everything warm!
Tuesday 19 October 2010
On the Tuesday night preceding the event Jonathon Levers, Paul Levers, Lee Pateman, Phil Rees, Liam Smith and I loaded up the Luton Van supplied by the University with all that was needed to run the event and transported it the 40+ miles to Buxton. This was the first time the full Le Mans track had been outside Derby so these were nervous times!
Wednesday 20 October 2010
Wednesday morning Alan Bullock, Phil Rees and I arrived around 9am to set up the track and drivers’ platform etc

It took the three of us until around 5pm to set everything up, although we did take our time pacing ourselves, even the vacuuming of each individual lane took an hour! There were also a few wires that needed re-soldering.
The Dome is so vast that the track only took up half of the usable floor space, the remaining area filled with computers and a restaurant. Each former stable is now either a large lecture room or a hair salon. On the first floor mezzanine are more lecture rooms and restaurants
At 5pm we ran a car round each lane without any problems the track being ready for the following day. With it being a domed roof the acoustics were incredible. Standing in the middle of the building it feels like you are wired up for sound. Stand at one end of the building and you can talk to someone at the other side without raising your voice, so long as you line yourself up with the roof beams.
The Mulsanne straight went straight through the centre of the floor, the sound of the car echoing off the roof like a gunshot a few milliseconds after the car passes by!
Before we left the Dean of Faculty came down and had a drive, being very impressed with the whole set up.

Thursday/Friday 21/22 October 2010
Thursday morning Alan Bullock, Phil Rees and I arrived before 8am just in time to witness a wonderful rainbow spanning The Dome.

After a much quicker vacuuming of the track we joined up with several University personnel to organise the signing in process. Having not seen sight of the names of the six teams that had already entered until late the night before, it was very strange to be signing in folk I had never heard of or met before. Normally I know most of the people racing. A seventh team had been formed overnight, the eighth that morning.

By the time all had been signed in we were 30 mins behind the normal schedule. All were then taken into a lecture room where Phil and I gave a drivers briefing. 60 faces looked back us, all totally unaware of what they were about to take on! This only took 20 mins.
We continued to move away from the normal Le Mans timetable giving each team 10 minutes practice rather than allowing all an hour practice. This was made possible as we decided not to give each team a car and pit box but have Phil and Alan either end of the circuit with all of the parts to keep the cars running. They each had spare chassis and rather than keeping the car off the track while the chassis was fixed they just swapped the chassis with another one and then fixed the faulty one.
At 11am we started Qualifying with the same car and chassis, again in team order so that we could ensure there was as little time as possible between each four lap (one warm up lap and three flying laps) run. Julian Neale, a former DHORC Member and lecture at the University whose idea it was for the event took Pole by nearly two seconds.

Unfortunately Team Shake & Bake, formed that morning by the senior students, decided to leave without a word during Qualifying and were never seen again. “Nowt stranger than folk!” as they say in this part of the world! So we were down to 7 teams before the start!
It was 1330 hours before the cars were finally lined up, colour scheme and lane being chosen in Qualifying order. The cars we ran were the lighted Tomy Porsches and Jaguars that came in the 4-lane Le Mans set. Phil had lightened and lowered them removing the lights as well as repainting them in bright colours. We used these as they are robust and we have an endless supply.

With the race under way I was able to move up to the mezzanine area above the track and photograph proceedings

Race Control was managed by several students and lecturers with me overseeing proceedings. Although between 3am and 9am I was left to my own devices, remembering to update the running score every 15 minutes, kill the power every hour and working with Phil on lane changes every 3 hours.

It was one long night, with Phil and Alan staying at their posts all through the night.

The paddock area certainly looked lived in come the next day

Every rule in the normal Le Mans Rule Book was broken during the race, competitors inviting their mates to both drive and marshal. At one time we had 15 people on the drivers’ platform and ten marshals down at the Mulsanne corner, several not being part of the event. But it didn’t matter they were all thoroughly enjoying themselves which was the most important thing. One of the no-no’s has always been not to walk through the centre of the track because of all of the wires, but that also went for a ball of chalk. However both Phil and I noticed just how careful everyone was picking their way over both the track and the wires. All showed real respect for everything, which stopped us worrying

By 9am The Dome again began to fill with students, lecturers and the general public

And still the cars headed down to the Mulsanne straight through the kink to the Mulsanne corner

Despite Julian’s valiant efforts for the Smartie team, made up of lecturers and students it was The Pounders who took the win by 105 laps. They were by far the most organised and thoroughly deserved the win.

The record they were trying to beat was the one set by the Derby University (Buxton) team at the 2009 Le Mans event when they recorded 4,505 laps.

However with heavier cars and a less experienced team they were unable to get within 768 laps of this.
Within minutes of the end of the race, which finished at 1415 we started dismantling everything, with the Luton van packed by 1645. Back in Derby by 1815 everything was packed away for 1930 and by 2130 I was dead to the world after being awake 40 hours! The same went for Alan and Phil.
A big thanks to all at Derby University (Buxton) who supported the event.
This includes Julian Neale for coming up with the idea, and for his boss Ruth Grindey agreeing to the event and clearing it with the University. The Dean of Faculty, Dr Peter Dewhurst was very enthusiastic towards the event and asked us to return next year, visiting us twice during the race. Tara Silverman and Laura Billingham also did a fantastic job with the logistics. I must also give a personal thanks to Claire Doxey, Hellen Giles and Beth Neale for their support at Race Control
Thanks also to all at DHORC who supported the event, without them there is no way we could have undertaken such a big exercise, here is to next year!
Apologies to anyone I have missed
Cheers

Facility News – Important Please Read!!!
Today Paul Levers and I met up with Colin Bancroft, Head of the Rolls-Royce leisure association, which runs the leisure complex that includes the Sports Hall that we run the Le Mans 24 hour race in.
Colin and the manager of the new complex showed us round the new facility and it is very impressive with a new reception area that will be manned throughout the Le Mans event from 0745 on Saturday until when we leave on the Sunday. The entrance has swipe access with barriers that can be overridden by the people on the reception. Please read the following information, as it is important that all aware of the changes as well as the do’s and don’ts this year. Please note there are three CCTV cameras in the Sports Hall and many others around the building. Anyone seen to be misbehaving will not be invited back. The usage of the Sports Hall is so important to the event any issues are black and while as far as I am concerned, everyone should respect the facility.
Entering and Exiting the Building.
There is only one entrance now, through the main reception. The back door is locked and alarmed, but is a fire exit.
I will leave a signing in and out sheet at the reception with all of your names on, you will need to sign in and out each time you enter or leave the building, even those who need to go out for a smoke.
All on reception have my mobile number if there are any issues, I’m sure there won’t be. Remember the CCTV Cameras!
The front doors will be locked at night so even if you nip out you will have to knock to get back in.
Entering the Sports Hall
The Sports Hall entrance has a coded lock. We will provide the code to all nearer the time.
The door must not be left ajar at any time as it is alarmed and will deafen all in the Sports Hall if it goes off! Remember the CCTV Cameras!
Food and Drink in the Sports Hall
A food and drink area will be provided immediately to the right as you enter the Sports Hall. Please consume all food in this area. Appreciate it is not so easy to always drink there. Please also ensure the area is kept clean at all times, no-one should have to clean up after someone else! Bins etc will be provided. Remember the CCTV Cameras!
No Kettles or cooking appliances are allowed in the Sports Hall. There is no problem bringing hot food into the hall however. Regarding hot drinks there are vending machines in the reception area. Alcohol is banned in the Sports Hall. Remember the CCTV Cameras!
Smoking
Please do not smoke near the doors, either move up the steps in front of the building or down the path. No butt ends should be left on the floor, all butt ends must be disposed of. Remember the CCTV Cameras!
Toilets and Showers
There are brand new toilets and showering facilities, these are available to all.
Sleeping Facilities
The normal camp beds will be provided by our charity The Derby Kids Camp (hope all have started collecting your sponsorship J) for Saturday night. If you wish to bring caravans etc then no problem there is a large car park area outside the Sports Hall.
Please note: No-one will be able to sleep in the Sports Hall on Thursday and Friday nights. The facility will be totally locked down and secure however so you can leave things if you desire.

Rules
There have been some discussions on the slot forums regarding the legality of advancing the Tomy Can Motors used at the Le Mans event. I have therefore discussed this issue with all of the team captains and they all agree the motors can be advance during the event to make a bad motor into a good motor but that the Can Motors must not be opened up. The rule update is therefore as follows: -
8807 Motors
May be advanced but the can must not be opened up
That’s all for now folks, a further update will be provided over the next week
